The GA undoubtedly had the best of intentions by her lights, but those intentions were not those of her younger family members.

I do think that Ransome's use of the elderly maiden (great) aunt is more than just a stereotype/slur. A character who had had children and/or grandchildren of her own would be more in tune with modern 1930s ways and be less likely to be so rigid and Victorian in her expectations of the Amazons' behaviour.
