As far as I remember, from RN CCF days, both Commodore (abbreviated as Cdre.) and Commander (abbreviated Cdr.) were RN ranks.
Commanders had 3 rings round their sleeves and Commodores had one thick broad stripe.
I don't think Commodore was a substantive rank until recently, but it designated a Captain who was in charge of aquadron.
