Your hypothesis does raise some interesting questions, Ed. I would be interested to learn how the in US Lippincott and Macmillan numbered their chapters.
I am lazy and would be tempted to run your TXT files through the spell checker of both WordPerfect and Word in their UK English versions. You might find a few more typos or be bemused by how fallible are the checkers.
Another reason for GN being a little different may be that the plot was devised by Myles North although heavily adapted by AR. We also know that AR was searching for a plot upon which to hang a story.
