As a child in the 40's I always had dinner midday. It was breakfast dinner and tea and if lucky supper.

I remember in the 1940s it was normal for the last meal of the day to be 'high tea', which was a substantial tuck-in. At bed time, we'd often have a cup of Horlicks (malted milk, basically).

Supper was only on special days.

I'm fairly sure that this was also true in AR's time as an author.
