Luke's comment as to "steam, sail and beer" does certainly, IMO, sum up the TarBoard concerns in the last 2 years or so, and yes, it sounds secure and congenial, but the downside is that the trio of topics, taken together, does give somewhat of an alpha-male impression. Not everyone can relate easily to that, although of course some can.

I have not joined in the general lamentation about the closing of TarBoard, because my personal opinion is that, on the whole, Ian is wise to wind it up now. Most things have a life-cycle and most things come to an end eventually. TarBoard in its heyday was terrific - around the years 2000 to 2004-ish IIRC there were always about half a dozen AR topics on the go, and there was no attempted monopoly of topics or postings. Lately I feel that the board has run out of steam a bit, and we have had the same people posting about the same subjects.

TarBoard has been compared to a school - oddly enough my feeling now is like the one I had when I left school - mainly relief, but coupled with a sadness that something which had been part of my life had gone. . . .
