Wristwatches became popular in World War I because they were both cheaper and more convenient than pocket watches in the trenches. They were not more expensive as Andrew suggests.
It is more likely that a boy would be given a cheap wristwatch rather than an expensive pocket watch and if he had both would take the cheaper and more robust wristwatch on a camping trip.
