I don't see any conflict in your quotations.
When rowing, the rowers are facing the stern of the boat, so Titty and Roger on the bow thwart would have been behind the Ds all the time.
I suspect "accidents of another kind" would be a clash of oars if the timing failed which would surely upset the Ds, or maybe the (remote) chance that Titty or Roger would also catch a crab.
