Last week my husband David finished reading Great Northern? aloud to
our children. During the penultimate chapter, when the evil egg
collector tips the folding boat over and winds up in the drink, all
three of my children, one eleven, one nearly four and one two-year-old,
were so worked up with excitement that my bedroom more nearly resembled
a lunatic asylum! Now, I concede that there is a great deal of narrative
tension, what with not knowing the fate of the divers and all, but oh
you should have seen these kids! Even after the boat tipped over, Jenny
(the 2YO) kept re-enacting the scene for our entertainment, letting
herself fall over backwards on the bed.
Now the question is what to read next. While big brother Jake is off
visiting Grandma for a month, we are reading Pooh stories, but when he
returns, we'll want to start on something new.
