Whilst I am a fan of "Do first & Tell afterwards", I am not sure that it would work in this case.
The parents were obviously keen for her to become the "youngest circumnavigator", and enter the Guiness Book of Records. this would entail a public start with media atttention.
She could not be absent from school without it being noticed and acted upon.
It would be highly irresponsible of the parents not to prenotify the maritime authorities of the intended trip. The authorities are the ones who have to try and organise any rescue or body recovery.
If it had been intended that it was done inconspicuously then she would be well on her way by now.
