One might pontificate that they 'connect me with my inner child', but I thought that they were simply good stories well told.
I think it's both those things. I had SA read to me first, then I was given them when I was eight, starting with SD, at least that's what it looks like from the dates of the editions I have (starting with JC 1948), and I read them for myself. At that time, it was the stories that I liked. Now I like them because they are so well written, and they convey place, time and character so very well, that I really can immerse myself in the stories and just enjoy them.
I know that everybody here (we're a self-selected group, after all) really enjoy AR's books, but it's worth repeating how very good a writer he was, by any objective standard.
