I just finished reading a copy that I got through inter library loan. It was the only one of the 4 Bannerdale books available, but it did give me a taste of the series.

One thing that others have not commented on is the subtle humor. One does get the impression that an aspiring writer is indeed writing his own account.

In an early scene, they have arrived at the cottage at night, and there is no food, except in tins. Bill writes, "They had always laughed at my famous knife, with its various cunning attachments. They were so witty about the gadgets for removing stones from horse's hooves that they quite forgot the knife carried a tin opener as well."

"I had those tines opened in - well quite quickly, considering I had never used that particular implement before, Then, when Mum had bandaged my hand, I said perhaps there was a tin of milk somewhere. But there wasn't."

There is also a nice map of the lake and surrounding land, plus a plan of the house. This Beckfoot won't need speculation as to where rooms are.

All in all, an enjoyable book with its own particular charm.

Claire
