It used to be more common for people to use completely random names, not the one that they were given by their parents! My mum's family (who came from India, and I do think this trend was particularly apparent in Anglo-Indian and Raj families) had loads of them, she was Bully (Virginia), her mum was John (Mary - actually Mary was her second name, she was Noreen), her sister Birdie (Thirsa). Why Nancy is of course an interesting question (I assume there must have been some reason for the names I've just listed, though they are lost in the mists of time). Nancy is quite a common name in traditional songs, sea songs, and sea shanties, so perhaps that's why it was suggested (although often Nancy is either "sweet and lovely" or a prostitute in these songs, so not necessarily a perfect model for an Amazon pirate!)
