My father worked in Baghdad from 1959 to 1969 and I spent a good deal of my youth there when not at boarding school in England. We never swam in the Tigris, though we did have a small motor boat. My father would have preferred sailing but the current was too strong for safety.
I attribute my relative immunity to stomach ailments to this early conditioning, though I was laid low by a dose of salmonella from some chicken I once ate in Morecambe.
