The Mesopotamians had their eponymous two rivers

Indeed. To be treated with circumspection. In Baghdad they do a lovely fish barbecue in which the fish is filleted and spread on sticks by (and around) a small fire- it's called a Mesgouf, or at least that's what it sounds like. You sit on the bank in the evening under the trees and eat it with handfuls of grey salt. Very delicious, very relaxing even when Saddam is still in charge... The second time we had this we were all ill. Nothing fatal, but it did prompt another look at the Euphrates. Don't go there... I wonder who owns that riverbed?
