On the whole I agree with Jock’s views on society incorporation. TARS became a company on legal advice, but when you approach a lawyer the answers you get depend on the questions you ask. The problem area is liability for personal injury claims in the event of an accident at a TARS event. To become a limited company is the traditional answer, and it certainly avoids the individual directors of TARS being personally liable, but it is a mistake to think that that means we need take no precautions about liability for accidents. A modest p.i. damages award could put TARS Ltd into liquidation, and in addition there might be a Health & Safety Executive investigation and a great deal of press interest.

This is just one reason why Christina Hardyment’s remarks in the new Mixed Moss ( p 41) are so completely out of order. If a child gets injured, or God forbid, killed, the outside world is not concerned with the fact that we were playing at being ‘Pirates’.
