Apologies for replying to Hilary's question so late -- I've been on a research trip and away from TarBoard.

The dedication was deleted, and the maps redrawn, with the 1970 printing of the Cape hardcover edition. In this printing also the author's note dated 'May 1958' was added. Although Ransome may have written the note in 1958 (I have no reason to believe it isn't from his hand), it was never published during his lifetime. The introduction of the note into the five Lakes volumes of the 'Swallows and Amazons' series, the deletion of the original dedications to _Swallows and Amazons_ and _Peter Duck_, the replacement of Spurrier's maps, and other actions were done according to the wishes of Ransome's widow. She discussed such changes with both Cape and Penguin (Puffin) Books soon after Ransome died in 1967, but it took some time for them to be instituted, and then not uniformly. For a fuller account, see _Arthur Ransome: A Bibliography_, pp. 78-9.
