The sardine tin survived unscathed. Water is unusual in that although it contracts on cooling like almost everything else, it expands just before it goes solid. (So the density of ice is lower than that of water which is why ice forms at the top of a lake.) Most other liquids (including the oil the sardines were in) don't expand on freezing. Beer is mostly water so tins or bottles of beer will burst. But its quite OK (in fact recommended if thinking of drinking it neat) to put a bottle of vodka into the freezer.

Now do we have a volunteer to try the jam. I think it should be OK as well.
