I tried jam in the freezer last night. In those little plastic containers you get at breakfast in hotels. The jam did not freeze solid - it just became more viscous. As far as I could see there was no obvious sign of expansion or contraction and so a glass jar would not break since there is an air space at the top of the jar which would accomodate any slight movement.

A thought: did jam jars in the 1930s have screw on lids? If so one effect of the cold could be to make the lid too stiff for even John to unscrew. Would Susan know the trick of running hot water over the lid to loosen it? Or would she have to wait for Dick to work it out scientifically?
