When the D's whirled their torch around, the Swallows did the same with one of their torches, but Dick noticed that their battery was worn out. It was then that the 'morse' flashes started, so this must have been with another, and stronger, light source. It must have been a lantern (Dick had earlier seen a lantern moving about in the yard). If Holly Howe had electricity, the morse could have been done using the light switch, but this would have needed a deft touch. (AR obviously didn't consider all this to be very important!)
