My mistake, then. I undoubtedly remember discussions on the issue and jumped to what seemed
a natural conclusion. An organization like TARS would undoubtedly
be a 501(c)3 in the United States given the advantages to being a corporate entity and the
advantages to being tax-exempt and for folks to deduct the value of their contributions and
to one degree or another membership dues. Even very small organizations (2-300 members) can be
and become such entities here; good examples are local historical preservation organizations,
member associations able to demonstrate the validity of the status (generally but not always
educational or charitable in nature); and so forth.
