As a time-waster I am recreating the lake in the north, using a
computer program - Arnold Palmer Course Designer. I think the lake is
about six miles long, which is much too long for this program to
handle without really slowing down. I have had to shrink the size
considerably, but there is room to include Wild Cat Island in the
proper size. Trouble is, what is the proper size? I have only three
of the Lake books, and can't find anything about the dimensions.
By setting up human figures, I estimate it is about 150
yards long and 80 yards wide. This seems about right for the landing
place and the secret harbour. Does anyone know more exact dimensions?
Did AR mention the size anywhere? I'm using the endpapers from Swallows
and Amazons as a guide. After having tried half a dozen programs, I
decided on APCR (comes with Microsoft Links 2001) because
it has a tremendous variety of trees, bushes and flowers, houses,
figures and misc. objects. It also handles elevations nicely and the
best part is that you can navigate through the completed scene. No,
I'm not employed by Microsoft - just found that APCD is the best
program for the job and also the least expensive.
If anyone else has this program it might be fun to recreate
Secret Water, the Norfolk Broads, etc. The drawback is that you can't
travel any slower than an estimated 60 mph. through the completed
scene. You can stop, though, and look around.
