Have a heart, John. That was when Swallow was way down below her marks to start with because she was so full of firewood that there was no room to row.

In any case, Roger was in his normal place in the bows, which is the most sensitive place of all to this sort of treatment. And on this occasion Titty was there with him too (she normally stowed herself abaft the mast,) thus depressing the bows even further before Roger started his ballast-shifting.

And finally, don't forget that we're talking about the family glutton here -- who's to say that Roger wasn't heavier even than John or Susan? ;-)
