I think part of the problem is there are so many places which are so much like SD but can not possibly be so that the local offerings fail to convince. Two of my favourites include a hidden pass in the Cairngorms NE Scotland) and a valley behind the Grey Mare's tail on Whernside (Yorkshire Dales) but neither have any AR connections to my knowledge.
Currently, my pet candidate is Tilberthwaite Gill which is firmly in AR country. You gain entrance from below by climbing a waterfall. You escape by climbing another. There is an adit near the top waterfall which may well be the one Pauline came out of "like a Jack in the box".
And even if Tilberthwaite Gill isn't Swallowdale it makes a very fine secret passage to the High Tops.
P.S. the climb by the top fall is quite hard and the lower one can be exciting in wet conditions but I think there is an easier way in via a side stream on the South side near the top.
