AR believed that a two year old needed a personal nurse to care for her and/or to assist Mrs Walker - something only the very wealthy would consider nowdays.

I don't know how true that is in your neck of the woods, Prue, but here in my middle class suburb of Toronto, there are a large number of Filipina nannies/maids whose job is to look after the young children of quite ordinary professional families, including my neighbours a few years ago before their youngest started school. I wouldn't have classed them as very wealthy though they tend to have good annual incomes. Most, but by no means all, of the families have two working parents. Their incomes might get into the C$150,000 range (under US$100,000).
