It's probably a year at least since I floated the subject of R as a Secret Agent here but can now prove quite categorically that Arthur was an agent of SIS (now MI6)from late 1918 onwards. His code name was S76 and he was reporting on the Bolshevik delegation in Stockholm to SIS in London from mid-December 1918 onwards. Certainly the visit that produced "Russia in 1919" was SIS sponsored and he tried to get SIS support for his visit later that year. MI5 had no clue that he was working for SIS but eventually gave him a "clean bill of health" in 1927 when he went to China for The Guardian. Anyone with any thoughts I'd be pleased to hear from you.
