Interesting comment on private waters Jonathan, and I'd like to take it a step further.
While in the UK last year we came across a private beach in Torcross. this to us is very unfamiliar as here in New Zealand, all beaches are public property and Queen's chain legislation means that public have automatic access a chain up the beach from the high water mark.
In addition I believe streams are also included in public access, a law which really annoys the rich who buy high country stations and then find they can't exclude people from fishing there.
Tommy Suharto of the mafia-like family who ruled Indonesia had his manager use guns, dogs and assault to keep people out. Fortunately his reign didn't last long.
