Adlard Coles' remarks, in the first edition of "Heavy Weather Sailing":

"In 1925 my wife and I bought a 12 ton gaff ketch at Riga, which we remaned "Annette 2". She was a heavy double-ender of Scandinavian design measuring 29ft 7ins overall and no less than 11ft 4ins beam. The draft was 3ft 9in or 7ft 9in with the centreboard down. She was fitted with a hot bulb semi-diesel engine, which I could rarely get to work. Everything about this boat was heavy and solid..."

"...a yacht with a very small sail area, such as Annette 2, is so slow in light or moderate winds that, without auxiliary power, she is a sitting duck for gales when on long passages."

Coles never again owned a boat of this type; maybe he was not very taken with her.
