On this side of the Atlantic (Pacific, come to that) "duh" is usually
said in response to a pointless or silly remark, to indicate that which
is patently obvious. The "u" is a prolonged shwa sound. A "shwa" to the
uninitiated is written in the phonetic alphabet by an upside down letter
"e". The usual sound of the shwa is a short monosyllabic grunt. "Duh" is
a long monosyllabic grunt intended to imitate a sound supposedly uttered
by someone with impaired intellegence when faced with a problem beyond
his ability to solve. People say it to me all the time.
