The Gulf Stream modifies the UK climate considerably. There is a widely held theory that if global warming continues the UK will get much colder as the release of fresh water into the Atlantic will stop the Gulf Stream or Atlantic Conveyor as it is known.
This last happened in the 17th/18th Century - remember tales of Christmas' of old where there is much snow and also the Thames freezing over.
The stop/start mechanism for the Atlantic Conveyor is not understood at present.
Depending on who, if anyone, one believes - the UK will either get colder or hotter.
