At the TARS Literary Weekend in 2001, we had a lot of discussion about the revival in children's reading caused by JK Rowling. The books were still a work in progress then.
Whatever literary critics may say about her style, she has some astonishing achievements:
- she has proved wrong the received wisdom that children's books must be short;
- and that they need pictures;
- and single-handedly she has caused teenage boys to queue up to get copies.
These are nothing short of revolutionary compared with the previous twenty years.
