I disagree strongly with you on that point. It wasn't rubbish then, and it's still true now, although to a lesser extent. Of course it's always possible to find exceptions, but they are quite far between.
It's not entirely confined to England, but from extensive experience in France, Germany and Switzerland (somewhat less in the USA), class is a great deal more marked in the spoken language here than in those places.
