I have no idea what 'caste' means in this non-Indian context, and I have no idea which 'caste' my family fit into.

It was merely an ironic equation (not mine) of Indian caste with English class. The equivalence is perfectly valid. It's one of those sayings that dates back to well before I was born, and has always struck me, as I was brought up here by parents outside the English class system (they were French and Swiss but lived in England for much of their lives), as being very appropriate. My wife is Swiss, and was very much struck by this english social characteristic, as have been countless people looking at England from 'outside'.
