I agree with you Elizabeth. Some recently written books which I have read have a hard,'edgy' feel to them which I found unsettling. Because they were so well written I felt involved in the story, which tempered my enjoyment of the stories. This was particularly so with the 'Strong Winds' series by Julia Jones. Less so in books by local Australian authors. I wonder if this reflects a 'tougher' childhood for British children than their Australian counterparts? Perhaps I am a bit soft?
