Checking my 1947 edition yes there is a girl lying down with her back to the viewer looking towards Roger, no plaits! In my 2004 reprint of the 1985 revised edition it is a girl sitting down, with plaits, looking at Dick walking away.

So when was this changed? (if anyone knows to save me looking through my various editions!)

I agree Peter about the quality of the illustrations in GN, but I can't imagine AR letting anyone help him!
