You can conveniently swim in Windermere from the beach parking area below Wray castle .. but take your rubber shoes as the rocks are bad. It is also very parky. Better, drive up towards Langdale and stop off at the Parking area a little way up, and walk across to the river--it's just about deep enough, and there are usually paRTIES SWIMMING IN THE POOLS, RUBBER RAFTING ETC. Even better, check in at the Langdale Timesharing, or the Wordsworth (?) Hotel in Grasmere, or the adjacent Beck Allen apts., and use nice heated pool. (The Ambleside timeshare - Quarry?) has a very tiny pool, but good enough for me.
