I am sure that this has been mentioned before, but a recent visit to Coniston reminded me of the topic: In Swallowdale, the S and A's climb Katchenjunga, and in Winter Holiday, Mrs Blackett suggest they do the same, in the middle of Winter. Today, no serious adult would let their children climb a mountain unaccompanied, and in Winter, no serious minded adult would do so, unless well experienced. We may well be too possessive of our children nowadays, but these scenarious are nothing to do with child molesters, etc, but with basic mountain safety. Similarly, Peggy crossing the Lake, unaccompanied, in mid winter,- a recipe for disaster? What do others think?
