In chapter 1, para 2, "She was an old Norwegian Pilot Cutter and had been borrowed by Captain Flint . . . . .", so I think that this quite positively identifies it. Colin Archer was quite a celebrity in Norway in his time, I believe, and pretty much had the sailing boat design field to himself. I don't think that pitchpoling a sailing boat down here in the Roaring Forties is any disgrace; a huge misfortune,perhaps, but no black marks attend it. The sea here gets pretty nasty.
