You cannot claim salvage if the vessel concerned would merely damage others if not assisted. For salvage, you must rescue a vessel from peril to or loss of that vessel. John could only have claimed salvage if there had been a realistic possibility that Goblin would have sunk due to a collision, or been so severely damaged as to be unseaworthy.
