Peter:

It is all about cost.

The oak planks are delivered from the saw mill in pallets. It is great to see a huge pallet of oak planks. Because the trees are different sizes and round the planks come out in different widths. The lot I had were from 7 inches to 12 inches. The saw mill sends them to the lumber yard as a set of standard thicknesses, usually 1 inch - 1.5 inches and 2 inches. For some arcane reason the lumber people call them 4 quarter, 6 quarter and 8 quarter. The thinner the sawn log the more work that has been put into making the planks that thin in terms of time and money and so forth.
