When on the farm in Southern Missouri we had a cast iron cook stove. The lids were removed to allow the fire to heat the bottom of the skillet. There were also waffle irons and kettles made to fit right into the hole in the top of the stove - these are now called "Antiques" ;). My father bought scrap ends of oak from the flooring mill for fuel - I remember that a dump truck load cost $8 - and two truck loads lasted all winter for the house and kitchen. This was all in 1945 - '48, just before discovering Mr. Ransome.
