wonder why I can not thats acceptance of a fellow human's word

I'm not quite sure what JMN means here, but I confirm once again that neither I, nor anyone else on this Board it seems, is denying a dowser's word. But surely John, as a scientist, has a natural curiosity in how the thing works? In fact, his outline theory is the nearest thing to a plausible explanation that I have ever read - I'll buy that one, John, although we need much more info as to what is going on in the dowser's brain and nervous system.

However, we still need to be careful. Inexact sciences can be used to exploit people. OK, underground water has a magnetic field, but do the remains of foundations have one? And all the other things dowsers claim to be able to find? I once heard a dowser claim that he could dowse for water over a map of the locality!
