OK, I'll go with the flow. There are a number of questions to be asked about the telegram which arrived in Ch. I of PM.

Nancy was 'at the telephone'. 'At'?? Sounds quaint. Would it have been one of the type which were fastened to the wall, with a detachable earpiece?

'Reply paid'? How did that work? Why didn't the G.A. simply ring Beckfoot? Perhaps she had no phone herself - there would have been one at the PO where she went to send the telegram. Why didn't the telegram arive on a printed form delivered by a telegraph boy on a bike, as I recall telegrams doing?

Why was Nancy restricted to 12 words in her reply? How did the 'telegraph clerk' know to switch from 'Mrs Blackett' to 'Miss Ruth Blackett'? How did the clerk know that it was Ruth Blackett who came to the phone? Poor security!

Why did the G.A. write to Beckfoot in Ch. III, instead of telegramming again?

Why hasn't Ed picked up on any of this?

(BTW, try as I might, I cannot see anything whatsoever ambiguous about 'Water in the bathroom')
