I also visited the Dog's Home last August. It was the high point of my visit! I wouldn't say it was a shambles at all, though of course I may have come earlier in August. There was no notice on the door. (To be honest, I'm rather glad of that, as it might have spoiled the atmosphere. A discreet marker a short distance away would be better.) The string was there. (Yes, people thought it most amusing that I'd taken pictures of a string.) I'd say the only ways it was in less repair than described in the book were some rot at the bottom of the door, and the lack of appropriate shelf and pegs inside. Actually the walls and roof may have been in better repair than in Picts & Martyrs. The beck wasn't exactly where I'd expected it to be, but otherwise it was altogether perfect. As much as I enjoyed the museum and the lake itself, the Dog's Home was by far the most "real."
