In the North Wales slate quarries, the quarrymen created "rock cannon", which were a series of interlinked bore holes on a rocky outcrop into which a small amount of black blasting powder was poured. When lit, the explosions would play a tune such as "God Save the Queen". They generally were fired for special occasions such as a coronation, but ceased to be used in the latter half of the twentieth century as the quarries closed down. Sadly a proposal for a firing at the Millennium fell foul of the Health & Safety mafia.

Does anyone know if they had anything similar in the Cumbrian quarries ?
