The water's high enough to drown the Egyptians and float the Ark into the harbour.

The level of Coniston Water has been lowered since AR's day. This was done by excavating the River Crake at the point where it exists the lake. During a spot of dry weather the signs of this are everywhere: the unnatural 'beach' at the end of Lake Road, Coniston; the 'high tide' marks on the secret harbour rocks, and the obvious landing place inside; the difficulty of getting round Peel Island with a centreboard down.

After a period of decent rain the Lake gets back to its old normal level, the secret harbour is secret once more and circumnavigating Peel Island is a doddle.

The only ones to benefit from lowering the lake appear to be the sheep who no longer get their feet wet during the monsoon season.

"Mutton", is all I have to say.
