I went to the Eirie county fair several years ago which was very good, the Florida state fair is good and also has carriage driving competitions.

The only US one I've been to is the New Mexico state fair. Interesting Indian (Native American) participation- their food was interesting and very good. The down home sporting spectacle was of course the rodeo, in an indoor arena. For an English visitor, the most interesting bit was the torchlight ride to the Stars and Stripes by the state troupers, and the ride by the local Albuquerque beauty queens. Later they were sitting in the row below us, in their coloured brushed velvet Stetson hats, a charming row of Barbies.

I always felt that these were the most authentic and enjoyable features of the fair. And the superb root beer and vanilla ice float I had; I love root beer floats and that one used local root beer and was the best I ever had; best of many, I'm ashamed to say- those trips had elements of a root beer crawl... Any airport we arrived at, I'd cosset the tapes while my PA Rosita charged off to locate the root beer float provider, not always so easy to find and getting more unusual as boring old Cola drinks got a firmer grip.

As I say, as I become an older and older fart, the world is going to hell.
