The magical beauty of The Backwaters was immortalised by Arthur Ransome (famous author of "Swallows and Amazons") in his novel "Secret Water", in which Kirby Quay and Thatched Cottage were Witch's Quay and Witch's Cottage respectively. The film 'The Snowgoose' includes footage taken in this area, and the television drama 'The Safe House' was filmed at Quay House.
