The pirating seems more natural to me than the conservancy- you might think that the young Coots would feel as Harry the eelman did, that birds are for catching.

Pirating is easy- in a non-literary society, the children are going to hear stories about the past- pirates, smugglers, highwaymen- the exciting bits will stick. Switching quickly to another book, remember that Young Billy entertains Roger with stories of the past. I'm sure that the 'old folks' of the Broads did the same.

Modern children are taught about the environment in school nowadays. Perhaps the children of the Broads, even in the thirties, were learning the same.
