Just reading the text does the job; it simply feels quite different.

I hadn't read PD till I was an adult, but I had read SD and so knew
that it had been 'made up'. When I read ML as a child, it did feel
different to the other SA books that I had read, and I worried about
this until I eventually carried out a less elaborate version of the
analysis that I have just posted. Once I had reassured myself that
ML was also a 'story within a story' everything in my AR world
was OK again.

The highlight for me is/was the night sail down channel,

I love this bit of PD too. It is so realistic, that for me, it is out of
phase with the rest of the book.

GN, although also rather different, was much more 'normal'...

I absolutely agree. I find GN a very dark book. I think that CN,
if it had been completed as it had been started, would have turned
out to have been much lighter.
