including a toxic mixture of toadying and boasting; all the absolutely worst features of fanzines and dating sites.

heh - don't think that is a fair characterisation of the Facebook "The Arthur Ransome Society" group - it seems gentle enough - but can certainly see your point for Facebook generally

the Facebook group already has around 130 registered members ( TarBoard has 566) - so it does have history and support.

It's also rather clunky to use...

TarBoard has been carefully whittled and fettled to produce a sinuosity, variety of routes through, besides the clunky main page

the code is a bit of a kludge with the registration/password stuff grafted on - free to bad home

most, even basic, web hosting nowadays comes with off the shelf, easily configured, "bolt on" forum eg this one for a bunch of motorcyclists
think it's this package-ish hosted at Pickaweb

Discussion and wrangling had been involved with closing down another board I run (Honda Motorcycle Technical Help Bawd) - with the creation of TARS forum, and having five weeks holiday saved up to take before the end of December, thought this a good time for me to lay down TarBoard too - will leave it up for another couple of weeks.

regards
Ian
